The crisis of COVID19 has created a new normal for all organizations irrespective of their industry ecosystem and pushed them to rethink their processes and business models, whether it is enabling remote work or delivering training/classes virtually. Educational institutions are at the forefront and best examples in driving this change at scale throughout their teaching processes, whether it is providing online/virtual classes or engaging with students in various activities to enable the learning at fun.
Considering this as a challenge and opportunity to re imagine and reinvent the education system, communities, educational institutions, and governments came together to build learning agnostic ecosystem and policies to drive this change for today and tomorrow. Considering the pandemic as an opportunity, many schools are adopting the technology as fast as they can to prepare themselves for the post-COVID world. The change is also pushing for more significant adjustments from all stakeholders, especially students and teachers, as learning was focused and limited to classrooms.
There are research studies available that enforce the fact and bring insights into ‘how technology can improve the accessibility and quality of education in each sphere of learning’ and today is the best time to test and pursue it for always. The ecosystem is there in terms of digital platforms enabling smart classes, virtual learning, and IT infrastructure in the form of internet, laptops, tablets, projectors. Now is the environment where schools are putting this ecosystem in place.
Enabling continuity in teaching through Digital Transformation
The apparent adoption of digital technologies has led to an unprecedented shift from school-centric education to home-centric education, where students have more flexibility to learn and respond. There are few prominent & essential technologies which are helping schools to continue their teaching as mentioned below –
Virtual Classrooms: The new way of teaching is much evolved and engagement-driven as virtual classrooms, and other online platforms are enabling continuity and more interaction between the teacher and students and thus creating classroom experience for all. Not only teachers and students, but smart classrooms are also helping in all processes of schools like a staff meeting, teachers, and parent meetings providing the necessary interactivity. The virtual classes are more flexible and deliver more productivity from teachers and students, alongside session recordings and make it readily available to students for revision. Some of the prominent platforms like Google Classrooms and Zoom are at the forefront of digital technology adoption by schools.
Digital content management platforms: No more books and notes; it’s all about content repositories and files accessible on-demand to students and teachers. Students can navigate to portals to access the classroom recordings, records, and books and leverage them as per their requirements. The platform is also enabling students to access the tutorials available on the internet.
Collaboration platforms: The new way of learning and teaching methodology has given rise to easier collaboration between teachers across different institutions. Schools are utilizing the same to enable topic-specific lectures from teachers available across the globe and enabling students with personalized learning.
School websites & apps: Everything, starting from the curriculum, syllabus, attendance, and parent’s feedback, has been made available by many schools on the website and can be accessed readily by all stakeholders. The school websites are transforming into a one-stop solution for everything, so no more physical notice boards and diaries. Due to the increased penetration of mobile devices and low-cost internet, mobile apps are building a more robust and on-click accessible ecosystem for schools.
The new normal will take us to the next normal
The impact of this pandemic will last for years and will undoubtedly become our way of life, hence creating the next normal for us. There are some early adopters, and some are laggards. Still, everyone has to understand the need to create a sustainable teaching ecosystem to maintain continuity and increase productivity, accessibility, and quality of education. Moreover, this is undoubtedly an inflection point to test the water and then adopt it for the future.
